620 wildlife carnivores from the county of Brandenburg, Germany were e
xamined for the presence of Echinococcus multilocularis infection. Mor
e intensive examinations were conducted in the 5 northwestern district
s. E. multilocularis was detected in red foxes, but not in cats, marte
ns and one racoon. The estimated prevalence of infection was 6.2-11.5%
. The results indicate that Brandenburg is currently the most northerl
y region of Germany which is endemically infected.
