Abstract
A technique of direct generation and detection of femtosecond electron bunches is reported. These electrons pulses are measured with high ac curacy using nonlinear photoemission. In this initial demonstration, n = 1 and higher-order femtosecond optical soliton pulses are used to l iberate electrons from metals.
