M. Papa et al., SPONTANEOUS CLOSURE OF INLET VENTRICULAR SEPTAL-DEFECT IN AN INFANT WITH DOWNS-SYNDROME AND AORTIC COARCTATION, Chest, 104(2), 1993, pp. 620-622
Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is considered one of the most common c
ongenital heart diseases in patients with Down's syndrome. It is well
known that some VSDs show a tendency to diminish in size and to close.
To our knowledge, in patients with Down's syndrome spontaneous closur
e of a perimembranous inlet VSD has not been described before. The pre
valence of some cardiac malformations and the rarity of others have be
en reported in patients with Down's syndrome. Left ventricular outflow
tract obstruction rarely occurs in patients with Down's syndrome. A c
ase of Down's syndrome with coarctation of the aorta, patent ductus ar
teriosus, and perimembranous inlet VSD that spontaneously closed by fo
rmation of aneurysm of the membranous septum is reported.
