Abstract
A scheme is given for approximating the solution of the exterior Neuma nn problem for the Helmholtz equation that employs the finite element method in an artificially truncated domain. A sequence of approximate solutions is produced by iteration. The current iterate is used to com pute a boundary condition on the truncating surface for the next itera te. While precise conditions under which the proposed method is conver gent are not yet known, numerical experiments indicate its robustness.
