YBa2Cu3O7-x/Sn (YBCO/Sn) composites containing 15-50 wt % Sn were prep
ared by conventional powder metallurgy and pressureless liquid-phase s
intering at 230-degrees-C. Tin was found to wet YBCO, replace the poro
sity and distribute homogeneously among the YBCO grains. No reaction o
ccurred between the two phases. Hardness changes were consistent with
the observed microstructural features. Room-temperature compression te
sts revealed strains higher than 2% at the maximum stress, and stress
strain curves typical of composite cermets.
