S. Singh et al., PREVALENCE OF GALLSTONES IN ACROMEGALICS UNTREATED WITH SOMATOSTATIN, European journal of gastroenterology & hepatology, 5(7), 1993, pp. 541-542
Objective: To determine the prevalence of gallstones in patients with
acromegaly untreated with long-acting somatostatin analogues. Design:
Abdominal ultrasound examinations were performed on patients with acro
megaly who had never been treated with somatostatin analogues. Results
: Seven out of 50 patients were found to have gallstones. None of the
patients had previously had cholecystectomy. Three patients had small
gallbladder polyps. Conclusion: The observed gallstone prevalence of 1
4% was not statistically different from the expected prevalence of 11%
. Acromegalics untreated with somatostatin analogues do not have an un
duly high prevalence of gallstones.
