A NEW SPECIES OF CICINDELA (CICINDELA) (COLEOPTERA, CARABIDAE, CICINDELINI) FROM REMNANT NATIVE GRASSLAND IN SANTA-CRUZ COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

Cicindela ohlone, new species, is described from Santa Cruz County, Ca lifornia (type locality: Soquel). Distinguishing characteristics of ex ternal form and genitalic structure, geographical and habitat distribu tion, and life history are discussed. This species is closely related to Cicindela purpurea Olivier and a member of the purpurea species gro up of subgenus Cicindela. The apparently restricted geographical and h abitat ranges of this species, coupled with pressure for urban develop ment of areas occupied by its known populations, raise immediate conce rns for its long-term survival and that of other species that share it s native grassland habitat.
