EXAFS and XANES spectra of photosystem II preparations from spinach an d Synechococcus in the S1 and S2 states are presented. The structure, oxidation state, and the role of the cofactors calcium and chloride ar e discussed. A structural model for the Mn complex in photosystem II i s proposed.
