Abstract
This article assesses the present situation of mechatronics in the Net herlands. After a short historical survey, it describes the postgradua te ''mechatronic designer course,'' introduced in 1991, It deals with the principles of this course and how these principles have been imple mented. Also, the activities of the Dutch government in cooperation wi th the industrial mechatronics community to enhance the awareness or m echatronics, especially directed toward small and medium-sized enterpr ises (SME's) is described.
