Abstract
We study the evolution with density of the quark condensate beyond the approximation of independent nucleons. Our method relates this evolut ion to the nuclear SIGMA-commutator which is treated as a soft-pion sc attering problem. We evaluate the pion-exchange correction to the soft amplitude, which incorporates the effect of tensor correlations. Our result has a simple physical interpretation in terms of the pion exces s number.
