Abstract
This paper discusses the Taguchi method as an approach to design optim ization for quality. The method is briefly explained and its applicati on is illustrated by the use of a propulsion system design optimizatio n study for an advanced space transportation vehicle as an example. Th e results suggest that the Taguchi method is a systematic and efficien t approach that can aid in designing for performance, quality, and cos t. Principal benefits include significant time and resource savings an d the determination of parametric sensitivities and interactions.
