This paper discusses the Taguchi method as an approach to design optim
ization for quality. The method is briefly explained and its applicati
on is illustrated by the use of a propulsion system design optimizatio
n study for an advanced space transportation vehicle as an example. Th
e results suggest that the Taguchi method is a systematic and efficien
t approach that can aid in designing for performance, quality, and cos
t. Principal benefits include significant time and resource savings an
d the determination of parametric sensitivities and interactions.
