Nlc. Luban et al., PERICARDIAL EXTRAMEDULLARY HEMATOPOIESIS IN A NEONATE WITH CONGENITALHEART-DISEASE - A CASE-REPORT, Acta cytologica, 37(5), 1993, pp. 729-731
A case of pericardial extramedullary hematopoiesis in a neonate with c
ongenital heart disease was diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytolo
gy. Undifferentiated blasts, promyelocytes, metamyelocytes and nucleat
ed red blood cells were evident in the pericardial fluid specimen. The
differential diagnosis of bone marrow contamination of pericardial fl
uid secondary to inadvertent sampling of neonatal hypodense bone tissu
e is also discussed. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case
of neonatal pericardial extramedullary hematopoiesis associated with
congenital heart disease.
