Enzyme-loaded microcapsules were prepared and treated with dimyristoyl
phosphatidylcholine molecules so as to control the permeation of subst
rates through the microcapsule membranes. The activities of enclosed e
nzymes increased with increase in ambient temperature, but gave an abr
upt change at around the phase transition temperature of the lipid. Th
e experimental results indicaca the possibility of making artificial c
ells which respond to the temperature change of the surrounding medium
.
