A brief review of known host-pathogen relationships within the Balansi
eae is provided for purposes of comparison. The precise nature of the
association between Balansia aristidae (Atk.) Diehl and its host, Aris
tida purpurascens Poir, is newly reported. The endophytic, systemic ha
bit and the distribution of its hyphae in host tissue preceding and fo
llowing egress to form Ephelis macroconidial and Balansis teleomorph s
tromata were determined by histological techniques. Unlike the conditi
on reported in some associations, the host is notably stunted in this
relationship.
