Abstract
Laser surface treatment (LST) results in significant improvement in fa tigue crack growth resistance of an Fe-Mn-Al austenitic steel. The obs erved beneficial effect is attributed to extensive crack closure as a result of compressive residual stresses originating from LST. The stru cture-sensitive nature of the crack growth operative in the base micro structure at low DELTAK levels (up to approximately 40 MPa m1/2) with LST.
