Cn. Macrae et al., ON THE REGULATION OF RECOLLECTION - THE INTENTIONAL FORGETTING OF STEREOTYPICAL MEMORIES, Journal of personality and social psychology, 72(4), 1997, pp. 709-719
Drawing insight from related research on thought control, 2 studies in
vestigated the process through which social perceivers inhibit the ret
rieval of stereotypic information from long-term memory (i.e., intenti
onal forgetting). Study 1 considered the attentional demands associate
d with the task of forgetting stereotype-congruent memories; Study 2 e
xamined the efficacy of intentional forgetting under conditions of res
ource depletion. Confirming the theoretical predictions, the task of i
nhibiting stereotype-congruent memories made notable demands on partic
ipants' attentional resources. The findings are considered in the cont
ext of contemporary issues in mental control and stereotype function.
