This study established that S-degrees and Na2SO3 are oxidized by fresh
but not by boiled wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) chloroplasts. Since th
is process was observed both in the light and dark, it cannot be accou
nted for merely by the operation of the photosynthetic electron transp
ort chain. Involvement of several enzymatic systems localized in the c
hloroplasts is hypothesized.
