Results are given for a comparative study of the structure and distrib
ution of hydroxyl groups in samples of cellulose triacetate with low c
ontent of mono- and disubstituted glucopyranose units (j = 2.7-2.9) sy
nthesized by a heterogeneous procedure entailing activation of cellulo
se by acetic acid and a variant with complete or partial replacement o
f acetic acid by formic acid in the cellulose activation step. A quant
itative method for determining the content and distribution of primary
and secondary hydroxyl groups of the polymer is presented and discuss
ed for laboratory and industrial samples of cellulose triacetate.
