This article deals with results of investigations devoted to plasma-ch
emical synthesis of refractory compounds and their composites in the f
orm of ultrafine powders, as well as their application to obtain vario
us materials. It is shown that powders synthesized in plasma frequentl
y have specific physical and chemical properties, and that they can be
successfully applied to obtain high performance ceramics, refractory
ceramics, cutting tools, thermal-conducting ceramics, and various coat
ings, as well as in the modification of metal structure and properties
