Abstract
A dominant ataxia among four families of the Arnhem Land Aboriginal pe ople of Northern Australia has many clinical features in common with M achado-Joseph disease. Neuropathology on one case showed multiple syst em involvement, with sparing of the inferior olives and cerebellar cor tex, consistent with Machado-Joseph disease. Portuguese ancestry is po ssible, although not proven.
