The author suggests to locate the syndrome of ''emotional jam'' within
the frame of research on authoritarism, and illustrates the psychomet
ric quality of the ''emotional jam'' scale using a sample of West Germ
an students (n = 52). The correlations between this scale and a balanc
ed measure of authoritarianism varied with gender and the specific con
struction of the instruments used. The observed conceptual and psychom
etric shortcomings limit the usefulness of the ''emotional jam'' scale
for cross-cultural research.
