With the advent of modern technology, human activity has altered the b iosphere in ways that are harmful to living systems. As a result, huma n populations face a series of difficult challenges, such as economic and geographic displacement and adverse changes in health. Social work can play an important role in facilitating human adaptation to such e cological change. To do so, the profession will need to articulate val ues and purposes that encompass ecological concerns.
