This paper reports results obtained from studies on important and crit
ical issues related to nanospacing head-disk interface (HDI) developme
nt, which has to be achieved in high density (Gb in-2) magnetic record
ing. The new concepts for flying head slider mechanisms and novel non-
contact start-stop systems are also reviewed. It is essential to under
stand the nanospacing HDI phenomena and to develop new breakthrough te
chnology for head mechanisms and start-stop systems. These issues can
be settled through the integration of micromechatronics and microtribo
logy.
