Abstract
During the last decade, there has been an intense feedback between hig h pressure experiments and theoretical techniques based on the density functional formalism for the analysis of phase transformations. This has resulted in increased accuracy in theoretical computations and the y have now acquired predictive capabilities. Some successful examples are discussed. The existing problems and their possible solutions are indicated.
