Excess volume of mixing (V(E)) for the binary mixtures of acrylonitril
e and non-polar solvents viz. cyclohexane, benzene, p-xylene and mesit
ylene has been determined pyknometrically over the complete mole fract
ion range at 307.4 K. The V(E) values are positive for acrylonitrile cyclohexane system, negative and more neptive for acrylonitrile + ben
zene and acrylonitrile + p-xylene systems respectively. The values of
V(E) are less negative in the acrylonitrile + mesitylene system. The r
esults are discussed in terms of molecular interactions governed by in
duction and steric effects.
