The density-functional method is used to derive equations for describi
ng effectively the state of separate ions in plasma. The equations are
self-consistent and make it possible to use the average-atom model fo
r describing the remaining states, which are not taken into account in
dividually. Both a simple substance and mixture of elements are studie
d. The equilibrium conditions obtained in such a model require that th
e electron pressures in the atomic cells be equal for separate ions of
all components of the mixture.
