The effects of three wood preservatives on dampwood termites (Zootermo
psis augusticollis Hagen) and their gut protozoa were studied. Chromat
ed copper arsenate and ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate were associated
with absence of termite feeding and higher termite and protozoa morta
lity; low levels of polyborate affected termites more slowly. Dampwood
termites were generally more sensitive to preservatives than were sub
terranean termites examined in previous studies, which suggests that d
ampwood termite damage can easily be avoided through the use of preser
vative-treated wood.
