Abstract
The one-dimensional analysis of normal rod penetration, recently prese nted by Cinnamon, et al, 1992, is applied to a very soft target, 1100- 0 aluminum. The results are shown to be satisfactory for impact veloci ties under about 2.5 km/sec. Since the analysis is based on the initia l transient stage of penetration, the theory can be applied to impacts by rods with very low L/D ratios. The theory is entirely algebraic an d the depths of penetration are predicted from crater volume/kinetic e nergy curves. To extend the theory to higher velocity impacts, a new d istribution of pressure is introduced. These results are promising.
