Ma. Baig et al., ACCUMULATION OF TETRAPEPTIDE PRECURSORS OF MACROCYCLIC ALKALOIDS BY CALLUS OF CEANOTHUS-AMERICANUS, Phytochemistry, 34(1), 1993, pp. 171-174
Pulse-feeding of appropriate amino acids to rapidly-growing callus of
Ceanothus americanus led to accumulation of novel tetrapeptides that w
ere precursors of the macrocyclic alkaloids characteristic of the fiel
d-grown plant. Slow-growing pigmented callus lines maintained on a var
iety of media exhibited no detectable alkaloid metabolism but accumula
ted several flavonoids, some previously not reported in the plant.
