The copper(II)-glycine-thiocyanate ion system, which has been studied,
afforded a new 1:1:1 complex which crystallized with an additional wa
ter molecule. The IR spectrum of the solid complex suggests an aquo li
gand, a bridging thiocyanato ligand and a N,O-bidentate chelating glyc
inato ligand. Room-temperature magnetic moment, electronic spectra and
ESR spectra suggested a tetragonally distorted octahedral structure f
or the complex [Cu(glycinato)(NCS)(H2O)](n), which was confirmed by X-
ray crystallography. The complex contains mu(N,S)-thiocyanato ligands
and an aqua molecule. The glycinato anion chelates a copper atom via i
ts N and O atoms. The second O atom of the glycinato group links anoth
er Cu atom at a long distance of 2.908(5) Angstrom, giving rise to N,O
,O-tridentate chelating bridging glycinato ligand. The structure of th
e complex is further consolidated by hydrogen bonds of the type O-H ..
. O between aqua molecules and carboxylate O atoms. The thermal decomp
osition of the complex was investigated under nitrogen. Copyright (C)
