Abstract
A consistent exposure of similarity techniques in a one-dimensional th eory of a FEL oscillator is presented. The FEL model is discussed wher ein space charge fields and energy spread of electrons in a beam are t aken into account. The thorough investigation of the saturation effect s is performed with numerical simulation algorithm. To check an accura cy of numerical calculation, rigorous analytical solutions of a linear theory are used. A great number of universal plots, presented in the paper, may be directly used at a design stage of an experiment.
