STATUS AND MANAGEMENT OF THE WOLF IN POLAND

The history, past status and distribution of the wolf Canis lupus in P oland is presented. After being persecuted as a pest, the wolf was giv en game species status in 1975, with a close season from 1 April to 31 July. The wolf inhabits about half of Poland with two core areas in t he southeast and northeast of the country. Two main methods of hunting wolves (from a tower and using fladry) are described. Management atti tudes and threats to the wolf population are also discussed.
