High temperature strength of pressureless sintered TiB2 with Cr and C
additives had been investigated. The bending strength was measured for
temperatures between room temperature and 1400-degrees-C in air and i
n argon atmosphere. The bending strength was 385 MPa at room temperatu
re and increased from 560 MPa at 800-degrees-C to 620 MPa at 1000-degr
ees-C in air. The high temperature strength in average in argon atmosp
here was nearly constant in the temperature range from room temperatur
e up to 1400-degrees-C. The fracture surfaces created in the temperatu
re range between room temperature and 1400-degrees-C in argon atmosphe
re showed both transgranular and intergranular fracture modes.
