A new method for preparing SiO2-Al2O3 gels from aqueous solutions of t
etraethoxysilane and aluminum chloride was investigated. Addition of p
ropylene oxide to the solutions promoted gelation reaction, yielding t
ranslucent gels. It was found that the 4-coordinated Al incorporated i
n the framework of the gels was formed without heat treatment. Residua
l chloride ions were removed from the gels by heating. The gels obtain
ed had large surface areas and were presumed to be homogeneous.
