The crystal structure of indium titanate (In2TiO5) has been refined fr
om X-ray powder diffraction data by Rietveld refinement. In2TiO5 is is
ostructural with In2VO5. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space gro
up Pnma with a = 7.2418(7) angstrom, b = 3.5018(3) angstrom, c = 14.89
0(2) angstrom, V = 377.6(4) angstrom3 and Z = 4. The final reliability
factors were R(p) = 8.5%, R(wp) = 11.1% and R(I) = 5.6%. ln2TiO5 show
s luminescent properties below 220 K. The luminescence is discussed in
terms of crystal structure and compared to that of some other lumines
cent titanates and indates.
