The symmetry breaking of the grand unified theory SO(10) can proceed t
hrough the branches SU(5) or SU(2)L x SU(2)R x SU(4)c. We show that th
e latter is preferred over the former. This conclusion is in agreement
with the recent findings of the other groups.
