Abstract
This paper describes the LAPACK project, an effort to produce a numeri cal linear algebra library that runs efficiently on shared memory vect or and parallel processors. A description is given on what was done to achieve performance and results are given for various computers. In a ddition, future directions for research on parallel computers are disc ussed.
