A sequence of two-hourly water level observations at Samsun and Trabzo
n located on the eastern Black Sea coast have been analyzed in order t
o investigate the general nature of the sea level variations. Long (se
veral days) oscillations of non-tidal origin have been identified. Wat
er level fluctuations are dominated by energy inputs from low frequenc
y sea level variations. The tidal oscillations are very small in ampli
tude with a spring range of 0.74 and 1.9 cm in Samsun and Trabzon, res
pectively. Tidal oscillations are dominated by semi-diurnal constituen
ts. Short periods of oscillation (7.1, 4.3, 3.0, 2.3 hr) have been ide
ntified in the sea level spectrum.
