Jr. Flower et al., THE GRAPHICAL MASS-BALANCE IN THE EARLY DESIGN OF CLEAN PROCESSES, Process safety and environmental protection, 71(B3), 1993, pp. 194-202
A new procedure to aid the design of 'clean' chemical production proce
sses is presented. 'Environmental targets' for a process are defined,
and a visual means of mass balance manipulation-the Graphical Mass Bal
ance (GMB) is introduced. Together, they allow the designer to quickly
and easily explore the range of operational conditions of a process,
with both economic and environmental considerations in mind. A case st
udy highlights the practical application of the method.
