The polarisation of HOD monomers by different cations and solvents has
been determined by an IR spectroscopic method in diluted solutions (1
: 100) H-bonds or van der Waals interactions of HOD can increase by 1
0 until 450% depending on the cation position in the Hofmeister or lyo
tropic ion series. The cause of this ion polarisation series is clarifi
ed as similar to the series of the Coulomb field strength.-Methanol me
asurements show the same cooperativity factors (cf.) as HOD within our
error limits.Similar results were found with Lewis acids(L.a.)/methan
ol/solvents interacting with H- bonds as well as with van der Waals in
teractions. The series of L.a. of L.a. cfs. is at most only proportiona
l to the Coulomb field strength of the cation parts in homologuous ser
ies. The cfs. of L. a. are relatively large and seem to correlate with
the solvolyse/hydrolyse or with catalytic properties.
