J. Krall et al., ENHANCED ACCELERATION IN A SELF-MODULATED-LASER WAKE-FIELD ACCELERATOR, Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics, 48(3), 1993, pp. 2157-2161
An alternative configuration of the laser wake-field accelerator is pr
oposed in which enhanced acceleration is achieved via resonant self-mo
dulation of the laser pulse. This requires laser power in excess of th
e critical power for relativistic guiding and a plasma wavelength shor
t compared to the laser pulse length. Relativistic and density wake ef
fects strongly modulate the laser pulse at the plasma wavelength, reso
nantly exciting the plasma wave and leading to enhanced acceleration.
