In a prospective study 500 patients were examined sonographically foll
owing laparoscopic cholecystectomy, 183 on several occasions. In the m
ajority of patients (79.4%) there were no remarkable findings, either
clinically or sonographically. In 102 patients (20.4%) there were sono
graphic abnormalities such as fluid collections in the gallbladder bed
(13%), postoperative dilatation of the biliary passages (9.4%), free
abdominal fluid (2%) or pleural effusions (1.2%). Only 25 patients (5%
) showed clinical symptoms; there was complete agreement with the find
ings on ultrasound.
