Zs. Nickolov et al., WATER-STRUCTURE AT INTERFACES STUDIED BY TOTAL INTERNAL-REFLECTION RAMAN-SPECTROSCOPY, Colloids and surfaces. A, Physicochemical and engineering aspects, 76, 1993, pp. 41-49
Total internal reflection Raman spectroscopy has been used to study th
e O-H stretching vibrational band of water adjacent to a hydrophobic s
urface, formed by a Langmuir-Blodgett film of omega-tricosenoic acid.
The Raman spectra indicate that the structure of water is enhanced in
the neighbourhood of the hydrophobic surface. Various experimental dif
ficulties hinder the assessment of the range of this structural enhanc
ement, but it seems likely to extend over at least several molecular d
iameters.
