The adsorption properties of aqueous solutions of sodium alkyl sulfate
s and their oxyethylates have been studied systematically. The effect
of defined structural changes on the adsorption parameter values calcu
lated on the basis of Frumkin's surface equation of state has been dem
onstrated. In particular, a comparison has been made between n-dodecyl
and cyclododecyl as hydrophobic groups in sodium alkyl sulfate and it
s ethers. The limiting areas obtained by surface tension measurements
have been discussed on the basis of the crystal structure data of n-do
decyl sulfate and theoretical calculations on the three-dimensional sh
ape of selected conformers of cyclododecyl sulfate.
