Copolymerization of 3-(4'-butyl-4'-methyl-4'-silaoctyl)thiophene with
3-nonylthiophene was carried out and the effects of photooxidation on
the electrical properties of the resulting copolymer (I) were compared
with those of poly(3-nonylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (PNT). Photooxidation o
f both PNT and I shifted the lambda(max) to shorter wavelengths due to
conjugation-breaking reactions. The extent of the conjugation-breakin
g reactions by photooxidation was higher in I than in PNT for a given
exposure. Films of I were undopable after irradiation.
