Two series of supported ruthenium catalysts were prepared and characte
rized in a pulse chromatographic reactor. One series was obtained by e
xchange of silica in basic solution with the Ru(NH3)6Cl3 COMPlex, and
the other by impregnation of high-area activated charcoal with RuCl3 s
olutions. The dispersion of ruthenium on silica is measured by oxygen
chemisorption at 298 K (OC298) and the total metal content after compl
ete metal oxidation at 723 K (OC723). For charcoal-supported catalysts
, these techniques were modified to account for the reductive properti
es of the support. Metal dispersion was obtained from both OC298 and a
temperature-programmed hydrogen titration of oxygen adsorbed at 298 K
(TPHT). The total metal content was deduced from the temperature-prog
rammed reduction of the precursors.
