The phase transition in n-propylammonium chloride at 193 K from ambien
t tetragonal to monoclinic phase has been studied through Cu2+ electro
n paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The EPR spectrum is characterized by g
(parallel-to) = 2.058(1), g(perpendicular-to) = 2.147 at 300 K. The ab
sence of resolved hyperfine structure due to Cu-63, Cu-65(I= 3/2) nucl
ei suggests a site of tetrahedral symmetry for Cu2+. g(parallel-to) g(
perpendicular-to), (g) and line width monitored through the phase tran
sition show a ''gradual'' change over characteristic of a second order
phase transition. The thermal analysis (DSC) and room temperature inf
rared spectra were also performed and the results are discussed in det
ail.
