The reaction of barium with tantalum under a stream of nitrogen at 122
3 K is conducted in a tantalum crucible, and the melt is quenched to r
oom temperature to yield the title compound. The structure of its anio
nic portion consists of isolated [TaVN4]- tetrahedra, nitride ions. an
d azide ions. Under the given reaction conditions elemental nitrogen a
ppears to be reduced to nitride via the azide.
