The karyotype of the giant mole-rat, Cryptomys mechowi (Rodentia. Bath
yergidae), from Zambia was investigated in one male and one female by
means of G-, C-, and AgNOR-banding techniques. The diploid chromosomal
set consisted of 40 biarmed chromosomes (2n = 40, NF = 80). A pair of
autosomes in the male and the X chromosomes in the female were hetero
morphic. The sex chromosomes were unusually large.
