Ek. Byrd et Pd. Byrd, A LISTING OF BIBLICAL REFERENCES TO HEALING THAT MAY BE USEFUL AS BIBLIOTHERAPY TO THE EMPOWERMENT OF REHABILITATION CLIENTS, The Journal of rehabilitation, 59(3), 1993, pp. 46-50
Empowerment of clients with a disability or chronic illness may be enh
anced by their personal belief in an ultimate rescuer (Yalom, 1981). H
olistic principals discussed by Perls (1969) suggest the need for bala
nce between body and mind, body and soul, thinking and feeling, thinki
ng and action, and feeling and action. Two individuals who are members
of a prayer and Bible study group were asked to record all instances
of healing in the Bible as they read their Bibles. The first author of
this article also recorded all instances of healing as he read the Bi
ble. The researchers also recorded all references in the Bible that ut
ilized the word heal or some form of the word heal, as well as the wor
ds sickness and illness, or some form of those words using Strong's Ex
haustive Concordance of the Bible (1984). This list of references was
cross referenced against those of the three readers to enhance the com
prehensiveness of the compiled list. Tables 1, 2, and 3 list the refer
ences and a number of details regarding each incidence of healing. Rea
ding of these incidences by persons experiencing chronic illness or di
sability may provide a source of empowerment to their rehabilitation.
Belief in an ultimate rescuer and the intercession to potential healin
g through prayer activity may be a source of empowerment to rehabilita
tion clients and the service delivery system they utilize.
